Woman’s Club Brightens Birthdays at Nursing Home
The GFWC Vernon Township Woman’s Club calls itself a “giving” club for a reason. The small nonprofit, comprised of 36 local women dedicated to making the world a brighter place, gives generously to all factions of the community all year long.
The club’s most recent act of kindness is actually an ongoing effort. Every month, they bring gift bags to the Homestead Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Newton for any residents celebrating birthdays.
“Sadly, many nursing home residents receive no visitors, but a simple birthday gift from our club lets them know someone is thinking of them,” said Judy Phillips, project co-chairperson. The bags contain small gifts like scarves, notepads, socks, stuffed animals and puzzles, but the gesture is far more important than the actual items. It truly is the thought that counts. And the clubwomen live by the adage that it’s better to give than receive.
Accompanying every gift bag is a birthday card addressed to the recipient and signed by a club member. The club delivers up to 100 bags each year, and will happily accept donations such as socks, gloves, hats, ball caps, knick-knacks, puzzle books, jewelry and $5 Walmart gift cards.
The birthday bag project is just one of the many acts of kindness offered by the Vernon Township Woman’s Club. Women of all ages and from all towns, who share a commitment to volunteerism, are invited to join and participate in the club’s generous activities.
