Box Tops and Labels – I delivered all the box tops and Campbell labels to Walnut Ridge School. They were very happy to receive them and told me that they do not collect the labels any longer. It seems that it is hard to redeem them, so they only do the Box Tops for Education. So please continue to save the Box Tops and for now do not bring in the labels. If I find a place for them I will let you know in a fall newsletter.
Girl Scout Gold Award - A luncheon was held on May 22nd to honor five girls that received their Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts. I was invited to attend but was unable to due to a family conflict. I thank Lisa Mills for attending. Our club presented each girl with a check in the amount of $25.00.
Girls Career Institute – This year we sponsored a student from Vernon Township High School at GCI. She attended from June 6th through June 9t at Douglass College. She was able to experience College life during this time, eating in the cafeteria, sleeping in dorms, taking part in several seminars and lots of interacting with other girls from around the state. She was very excited to attend, appreciated the fact that we would do this for her, and also the $25.00 spending money that we gave her. We will hear all about her experience at our September meeting. She is planning on attending a four year college where she will study nursing and the medical field. I want to thank Judy Filippini and Anne Whitty for conducting the interviews at Vernon High School.
Academic Improvement Awards – I worked with the Guidance Department in Loundsberry Hollow (6th grade) and Glen Meadow Middle School (8th) grade to honor eight students for their academic improvement this year. Each student received a certificate and a check for $50.00. I attended the awards assemblies on June 10th and June 13th and the students were very pleased as well as the faculty thanking us for doing this for the students. I thank Judy Filippini for helping me with this project.
Scholarships – we received nineteen applications for our Community Service Award. It was voted at our May meeting to increase the amount to $750.00 this year and award two scholarships. One recipient is a senior at Pope John High School and resides in Highland Lakes. She is planning to attend college and study Human Development and Family Studies. The other recipient is a student of Vernon High School and resides in the McAfee section of Vernon. She plans to attend Rowan University and study Mechanical Engineering. I thank Anne Whitty for helping me read all the applications and deciding who the recipients would be.
I would love to have other members of the club join me on any or all aspects of the Education Committee. The next event will be the Letters to Santa, which is always a fun time.
