The Civil Engagement and Outreach committee provides outreach and support to our localand worldwide civil institutions.
Much of our support is for the Military and Veterans:
Cell phones for Soldiers: Used cell phones are collected from local sites and packaged in groups of at least 10 phones. The phones are then sent to Cell Phones for Soldiers where they are recycled and used to provide Minutes that Matter to our active military which helps them keep in touch with their families while deployed. In 2019 we collected and sent 84 cell phones to help our soldiers.
Wounded Warriors: Hundreds of hats have been knitted or crocheted for our warriors which they can wear under their helmets. We have patterns for both knitted and crocheted hats and encourage all members to help with this project. This past year we sent 47 hats to this worthwhile cause.
Operation Yellow Ribbon: Every year the VTWC makes and fills stockings as part of the NJ State Federation of Women's Clubs’ Operation Yellow Ribbon. Stockings are filled with non perishable food and snacks, personal items and notes of support and sent to soldiers in the military. This past year our efforts along with other women's groups surpassed former stocking collections with a total of 2,318 stockings made and filled, and $5818 to cover shipping costs.
Veteran Support: Members collect crossword puzzles from various sources which are glued to donated thin cardboard by one of our members and donated to our veterans at East Orange VA Hospital. This past year we sent them over 1400 crossword puzzle games.
Wreaths Across America: Every year we sponsor wreaths which are laid on local veteran’s graves to honor and memorialize our brave soldiers. Last year we sponsored 7 wreaths.
Soldiers Angels: A yearly donation is made to this cause which is an outreach program for deployed service people, military families and veterans providing supplies not provided by the military.
St. Jude’s Childrens’ Hospital Ranch Card Program: Card fronts are reused and glued to card stock to provide new cards which the children can use while in the hospital.
Other outreach programs include:
Heifer International: This organization works in 21 countries alongside local farmers and business owners. Families may be given a gift of animals, trees, bees or fish to name a few. Heifer International provides crucial training to help individuals and families turn these gifts into productive income. Each year our club chooses an area to donate to. Our donations have included chicks, ducklings, bees, women’s business initiatives and we always have fun finding new ways to raise money for this worthwhile cause.
Food Pantries: Food and monetary donations are made to local food pantries supplying necessary support for families in need.
COVID support: Many masks and surgical caps were made by members in support of local hospital nurses and a local business. We support our local heroes in their efforts to combat this pandemic.
