Projects & Activities

The Vernon Township Woman’s Club is dedicated to improving the lives of others and impacting the community in positive ways.  The following list summarizes many of the club’s philanthropic and operational activities.


  1. Girls’ Career Institute – sponsor a high school junior to attend the “college experience” event at Douglass Residential College.
  2. High School Scholarships – provide two local high school seniors with $750 scholarships toward college.
  3. Continuing Education Scholarship – provide a $500 scholarship to a woman over age 25 who is returning to school to earn a degree or certificate.
  4. Middle School “Most Improved” Awards – offer $50 awards to eight students who have shown effort and improvement in their schoolwork.
  5. Eagle Scout and Gold Award Gifts – present $25 checks to local Boy Scouts who earn the Eagle Scout designation and Girl Scouts who achieve the Gold Award.
  6. Santa Letters – place a “mailbox” in local post offices and respond to letters written by children to Santa.
  7. School Support – collect Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup labels for local schools.
  8. Youth Contest Awards – sponsor creative writing contests, spelling bees, or other student-related events.

Home Life

  1. Domestic Abuse Services (DASI)
  1. Easter baskets – prepare and deliver baskets for all children living in shelter or transitional housing
  2. Christmas gifts – purchase, wrap and deliver gifts for all children living in shelter or transitional housing
  3. Clothing & supplies – provide as many items as possible when requested by DASI (often urgent requests for families that arrive with nothing) for shelter and transitional housing.
  4. Cookie Cans – deliver homemade cookies to residents of shelter.

  2.  Family Promise

  1. Christmas gifts – purchase, wrap and deliver gifts for children.
  2. Easter baskets – prepare and deliver baskets for children in program.

  3.  Putting Prayers to Action  (formerly Tender Loving Care Ministries)

  1. School clothes – purchase and send new clothing for several children for the first day of school.
  2. Easter outfits – purchase and send new outfits for Easter for several children.
  3. Hats/scarves/mittens – knit and send sets for underprivileged children.

  4.  Homeless, Elderly & Hospital Patients

  1. Birthday Bags – prepare and deliver (monthly) gift bags full of small items for each resident of Homestead Nursing Home.
  2. Pillows & Lap Blankets – hand made and delivered to Newton Memorial Hospital – pillows for breast cancer patients and blankets for hospital patients
  3. Backpacks for Men – pack and deliver backpacks full of toiletries for men living in the homeless shelter.
  4. Margaret Conti – send gifts, notes, cards, etc., to our adopted friend living in a woman’s development center.
  5. Greeting Cards – send the covers from greeting cards to St Jude’s center where the children turn them into new cards and sell them to raise funds.
  6. Community Help – provide funding or supplies to members of the local community as needed.

Public Issues & Military Support

  1. Boatsie’s Boxes – sew and stuff Christmas stockings for soldiers serving overseas; this is a statewide project and all stockings are delivered by the NJSFWC to West Virginia where they are then sent overseas.
  2. Warmth for Warriors – knit skull caps for soldiers
  3. Cell Phones for Soldiers – collect and mail used cell phones to this organization which in turn loads them with minutes and sends them to servicemen and women.
  4. Crossword Puzzles – provide individual puzzles with answer key to East Orange Veterans Administration Hospital.
  5. Ladies of Liberty


  1. Media Relations – send announcements, articles and photos about meetings, activities and fundraisers to local newspapers.
  2. Newsletter – prepare and distribute monthly newsletter to members.
  3. Website – maintain and update VTWC website with news, photos, etc.
  4. Flyers – develop and distribute flyers for fundraisers and other events.
  5. Yearbook – publish annual booklet of member contact info, board & committee members, yearly budget, and other helpful information.
  6. Facebook Page – maintain and update social media with announcements, photos, etc.


  1. Monthly Invitations – extend invitations to prospective members.
  2. Brochure – update and send brochure to potential members.
  3. Fairs/Events – set up and staff a table/booth at local events to raise awareness of club and recruit new members.
  4. Nametags – order nametag pins for all new members.
  5. Business Cards – order business cards for all members to use.
  6. Honor Roll – nominate members to be recognized by the NJSFWC.


  1. Heaven Hill Fall Festival – work at ticket booth and gate on weekends during the farm’s extremely popular event.  Our largest fundraiser.
  2. Dine to Donate Events – coordinate events with local eateries who will donate a portion of the income during a specified time period to our club.  Recent events were held at The George Inn, Sit & Chat Diner and Wendy’s.
  3. Garage Sale – hold a yard sale at Heaven Hill Farm on the day before Mother’s Day, selling items donated by our members.
  4. Gift Cards – sell gift cards for profit through the Scrips program.

Special State Project:  Prevent Child Abuse - NJ

  1. Pinwheel Garden – “plant” dozens of pinwheels at Vernon PAL Building to raise awareness for child abuse prevention.
  2. Library Books – purchase and deliver books about child abuse prevention to local library.

C. Online Auction – purchased items to sell at NJSFWC’s Facebook auction.


A. Speakers – arrange a speaker/presenter for each monthly meeting.

B. Annual Dinner/Installation – plan annual club dinner each May.
